A One's Cocker Spaniels
Cocker Spaniels belong to a large group of Hound dogs developed in Europe in the 14th century. Chaucer, the author of famous "Canterbury Tales" mentioned little alert dogs in his works. They were used for hunting small water and land game and were valued highly for their wonderful sense of scent and devotion to their master.

Spaniels that were mostly of lighter colors took their name from regions they first appeared in. Spain or, probably, the border between Spain and France is considered the true motherland of Spaniels. In their early years, they were also called "Spaniells" or "Spanyellys."

Cocker Spaniels - Breeders - What Made Them Special?

Spaniels were represented by a number of breeds each being rather specific. They were good at hunting different types of game. Land Spaniels acquired a lot of popularity by the 19th century. They were of two sizes. The smaller ones suited better for hunting in dense bushes. Their physical qualities allowed them to make their way through natural growth inaccessible to larger Spaniels. Those small dogs got the status of a separate breed in 1892.

Naming the new breed was not a problem. The decision to call it "the Cocker Spaniel" seemed to be obvious. The name stressed the breed's specialization in hunting the woodcock. So amazing was the dog's skill that breeders and dog lovers across England took to it immediately. At the end of the 19th century, the Cocker Spaniel weighed less than 25 pounds. Some time later, however, the weight restrictions were abolished and the Cocker of today can weigh from 28 to 34 pounds.

Cocker Spaniels - Breeders - American Influence

Once the Cocker Spaniel made its way to America, local hunters started to adjust the breed to their needs. The Cocker Spaniel was bred down a little with some other minor alternations. Breeding Cockers for conformation and show brought some changes in appearance and decreased the breed's hunting qualities to a certain extent.

The emergence of a new breed, or a new version to be precise, caused dissatisfaction on the part of true Cocker lovers. Inclinations to preserve the English Cocker Spaniel in its pure form resulted in the foundation of the English Cocker Spaniel Club of America in 1936. That year turned out to be a marking point in the development of the now two separate breeds - the American and the English Cocker Spaniel.

Cocker Spaniels - Breeders - Rivalry or Complementary?

The AKC has summarized the number of litters born each year by breed. These statistics show that the American Cocker Spaniel has a far greater success than its English counterpart does. The breed's achievements were so mighty that people started to associate the name "Cocker" with only this breed. Hence, US owners know the American Cocker Spaniel simply as the Cocker.

Quite a different picture is observed overseas. The English Cocker Spaniel has retained its position as the most loved Cocker ever. It is extremely popular in Great Britain, Germany, Sweden, and elsewhere. The name "Cocker" stands there for this very breed. When talking about the American Cocker Spaniel one has to specify the name.

Despite the seeming rivalry of the two breeds, each of them has evidently found its true place. Breeders and owners around the world have learned to value each breed's individual qualities and choose the right dog taking into consideration their appearance and personality traits. Thus, Cocker Spaniels can be said to have successfully obtained their share of recognition in the world of dog fanciers.
