American Cocker Spaniel Puppy

Since this breed is very popular, it’s not difficult to find an American Cocker Spaniel puppy for sale. The secret of the breed’s popularity lies in both its attractive appearance and lively, easy-going personality. The main beauty of these dogs is their luxurious profuse, well-feathered coat. The breed standard is very strict in what concerns coat colors and patterns in this breed. Purebred American Cocker Spaniels come in solid colors: black, buff, cream, and various shades of brown; and parti-color (white with black, white with red or buff, white with tan, black with tan.) The standard also specifies correct markings in parti-colored dogs.

For conformation shows, these dogs require professional trimming and grooming. After the show career ends or if the dog is of a pet quality, it can be trimmed short (a so-called “puppy cut”) for easier maintenance. The ears in these dogs are pendulous and fluffy. The American Cocker Spaniel has large expressive eyes that reflect a happy and friendly nature of the dog. Often, impulsive buyers choose an American Cocker Spaniel puppy just because it looks intelligent and friendly. Even the most intelligent dog needs early socialization and obedience training to become a reliable and obedient pet.

The size of the adult American Cocker Spaniel is about 14 to 15 inches at the withers; its standard weight varies from 18 to 28 pounds. An American Cocker Spaniel puppy is very small and fragile. It needs gentle exercise and lots of play and communication with the family. The bone structure of the puppy develops at about 6 months of age. At the younger age, American Cocker Spaniel puppies should not be taken for long walks or become exhausted by active games. Adult American Cocker Spaniels will be happy to have long daily walks and play active games.

This breed is relatively easy to housebreak, if the owners are consistent and firm in taking the puppy outside after meals and several times at night. To make a puppy into a pleasure to own, early obedience training is important. An American Cocker Spaniel puppy should be taught to walk by the owner’s side, sit and stay, come when called, go into bed when asked, be quiet when asked, and not jump up at people.
