American Cocker Spaniel
The American Cocker Spaniel is a relatively new breed. It originated in the 19th century from the English Cocker Spaniel brought to the USA. The original purpose of the breed was flushing the waterfowl. The name Cocker comes from the name of the game the breed was developed for – the woodcock. Up to nowadays, some American Cocker Spaniels are suited for hunting and retrieving, but most dogs of this breed are bred and kept as glamorous show dogs that also serve as watchdogs and do well in agility.
American Cocker Spaniels are very affectionate, sweet, and cheerful. These lively and devoted dogs with average intelligence level will make good pets for children and active families. They are very communicative and like to be around people. Every American Cocker Spaniel needs early socialization and obedience training. Without proper training, these dogs tend to be shy, territorial, possessive, or aggressive to strangers. Since it’s a very popular breed, many backyard breeders produce American Cocker Spaniel puppies for profit. It results in behavior problems and conformation faults in the dogs. Those who plan on showing the American Cocker Spaniel should be very careful with the choice of the dog.
To participate in shows for purebreds, the American Cocker Spaniel should correspond to the breed standard. Most canine registries and kennel clubs recognize the American Cocker Spaniel: FCI, AKC, UKC, ANKC, NKC, NZKC, CKC, CCR, APRI, KCGB, and ACR. In the USA, the majority of purebreds are registered by the AKC (American Kennel Club.) When buying a puppy, ask the breeder about registration papers. Unfortunately, a registration tells nothing about the quality of the dog. It only means that the puppy is purebred (comes from purebred parents.) The breeder should also provide each puppy with a pedigree and health guarantee.
Those who don’t plan on showing the dog can obtain a pet quality American Cocker Spaniel. Such dogs are sold at a discount because of a minor defect. Pet quality American Cocker Spaniels make excellent companions and gun dogs. Irrespective of the dog’s quality, each American Cocker Spaniel has plenty of stamina and needs daily walks and exercises to burn off its energy.
