Breed clubs and veterinary associations are promoting the breed by the means of educating the public about health issues and breeding fundamentals. Much attention is paid to certain diseases found in Cocker Spaniels. Special surveys are launched to summarize available data on dogs and reveal the true nature of hereditary disorders. Research work has already helped to decrease the number of diseases seen in Cockers and improve the breed overall.

Thanks to the efforts of responsible breeders and ownership, Cocker Spaniels have fallen down the chart of breeds that suffer the most from this disorder. The last two decades have been especially successful. According to data released by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals, Cocker Spaniels are not among the most frequently affected breeds now. Happily enough, Cocker lovers continue improving the breed's health through careful breeding and gathering reliable information.

Another common disease seen frequently in English Cockers is Progressive Retinal Atrophy. It is generally revealed in dogs between the ages 3 to 5 years old. English Cockers, especially parti-colors, also suffer from deafness. Since this disease occurs mainly in white-coated dogs, such as Dalmatians and Bull Terriers, it has grown to be linked to coat color. It is not fully known what the exact reason of deafness in English Cockers is.

Actually, Cocker Spaniels tend to develop other genetic diseases. To prevent disorders and lessen the possibility of affected litters, breeders have to carefully study the background of parent dogs and decide if the stud dogs and the bitch used in mating are good for breeding.

Responsibility should not lie totally on the owner of the female. To produce sound Cocker Spaniel puppies, both the owner of the male and the owner of the female should communicate true data concerning the health of the dogs. The ideal way of choosing a stud dog or a female is consulting breed clubs for studbooks and advice on breeding Cocker Spaniels.
